BASIC CRUISING STANDARD

Completion of the "first step", the Ashore component of the Basic Cruising Standard, can be accomplished in a number of ways. These include classes through Swiftsure Sailing Academy in Calgary & Edmonton or on a small-group "tutorial" basis directly with SailQuest.

This "knowledge" component includes an introduction into the "language of sailing", the identification of boat parts, safety requirements and practices, right-of-way rules, chart reading and basic navigation. There is a written examination for anyone desiring to acquire their own CYA International Cruising Logbook. The Certification contained in your Logbook is proof, accepted throughout the cruising world, of your competency as a cruising sailor.

The "second step" is the actual on-the-water sailing component. This is done on a 28 foot Catalina sloop rigged sailboat out of Penticton, BC. This training activity is limited to a maximum of 5 students at one time in order to ensure that each student receives a fair share of "helm time". The primary emphasis is on safety, boat handling and maneuvering.

These two steps may also be combined into a 1 week all-inclusive training exercise on the West Coast.

Upon successful completion, your "voyage" will be underway. You will be personally equipped with the essential skills that will enable to expand your horizon and you will have your very own CYA International Cruising Logbook and your Coast Guard - Pleasure Craft Operator's Card as proof. top

CANADIAN COAST GUARD

Major changes to the regulation of boating in Canada have recently come into force. Over the next 10 years, all boaters will be required to produce a Pleasure Boat Operator's card.

S.P.A.R.K. Start (Safe People Always Respect Knowledge) is the Canadian Yachting Association's (CYA) accredited Canadian Coast Guard boating safety course. This course was developed to address the federal legislation that came into effect April 1, 1999. SailQuest offers this Coast Guard approved program to keep you up to date and legal. There are numerous schedules within the program, depending on your age and general competency. SailQuest will integrate the schedule that is most appropriate for you. top
