At the helm of SailQuest is Sandy Keith. Sandy has been sailing for over 25 years, including 12 years active participation in the Olympic Tornado Class. I addition to holding his own Advanced Cruising Standard, Sandy is an accredited instructor in CYA's Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Coastal Navigation Standards, Industry canada's VHF Restricted (Marine) Radio Operator's Licensing, and the Canadian Coast Guard's - Boating Safety Program.

    Basic Cruising: training and practice in the fundamentals of sailing, rigging, boat safety, boat handling and navigation of a cruising sailboat.

    Canadian Coast Guard - Pleasure Craft Operators Card: acquisition and possession of this Card will soon be a legal requirement for all boaters.

    Coastal Navigation: will provide an introduction into the use of the essential reference publications, instruments (including GPS), Coast Guard aids to navigation and the plotting of a passage in order to safely navigate to your intended destination.

    VHF Marine Radio Operators License: a must for anyone planning to take command of a cruising sailboat equipped with a VHF Marine band radio transmitter.

    Intermediate Cruising: will prepare a person to take command of their own (or chartered) cruising sailboat for an extended cruise in coastal waters.


    Advanced Cruising: This Standard covers sailing theory, sail and boat trim, maintenance, heavy weather precautions, navigation practice, watch keeping and, spinnaker handling. The afloat component includes a "passage" of ar least 48 hours and prepares a sailor to act as skipper and/or crew of a sailing cruiser of up to 15 metres, operating by day and night in coastal or inland waters in any weather.
